the best skincare routine for oily acne prone skin

Creating and practicing a good skincare routine for oily and acne prone skin is very important if you want to maintain a healthy, glowing and youthful appearance.

I wish I had known this about 10 years before when my facial skin was looking its worst. I didn’t have acne in my teens but had a severe breakout in my early 30’s. Yep, I had adult acne. This lasted for years and if you know anything about acne, you know of the ghastly black spots that tell the tale of what was there on your face before.

This is how my face was riddled with acne before I developed a good skin care routine
Face filled with acne

I tried everything I could think of and bought many types of skincare products that claimed to get rid of acne. All to no avail as none helped my condition and some even made it worst. I was extremely frustrated and would not leave my house to go out without packing onto my face tons of makeup to hide just how bad facial appearance was.  To top it off, I have extremely oily skin.

It wasn’t until I decided to develop a good skincare routine for oily and acne prone skin like mine and practiced it daily, that I began observing positive changes in my skin.

You may be thinking that having healthy skin means applying products externally and that all will be well. However, part of taking care of your skin include applying products internally.

Internal aspects of good skincare

Drink lots of water

Since the body is made mostly of water, it is very important to keep replenishing the water that your body loses during various rigorous activities such as exercising or from simply sweating on a humid day. When drink water regularly, you are helping to flush the toxins from the body. Additionally, when your body is well hydrated your skin appears plump and firm.

Eat healthily

You may be asking what does eating have to do with the skin but unfortunately whatever you put in your body shows on the outside. If your body does not get the necessary nutrients including vitamins and minerals from the food that you eat, the skin will suffer. Since the skin is the largest organ in the body it needs a lot nutrients to keep it functioning the way that it should. For example collagen, a major component of skin plays a very important role in strengthening the skin by increasing its elasticity. If enough collagen is not produced then the skin will be quick to form wrinkles.

If you are unable to eat a balanced diet, then you could supplement with capsules which contains the necessary vitamins and minerals.

External Aspects of good skincare routine

Skincare routine

Before deciding on any products for use in your skincare routine, ensure that you know your skin type. Skin can be dry, oily or combination.  Choose the best products based on your skin type and the key is to develop a routine. This means that this is something that you must do on a consistent basis in order to get the best results. The routine shown here will be for oily skin. The basic skincare routine includes the following:

In order to get rid of all the dirt and dead skin cells from the skin, you need to start by cleansing your face. For oily skin, you need to use a foam cleanser.  Wet your face, apply a small dot of your cleanser to your hands, rub together and apply foam to your face. Massage in circular motion all over your face for about 60 seconds. Be sure to avoid the eye area. Rinse well with water. I don’t think that the temperature of the water matters, there have been many arguments for and against cold water but I think it is a matter of preference. I have been using cold water and it works really well for me.  For my cleansing routine, I use Neutrogena Pink Grapefruit Cleanser in the mornings and since I am working on my acne spots I interchange it with this soap which helps to eliminate pigmentation naturally.  I will use the foam cleanser in the morning and the soap in the evening.

The next step in the routine is to tone the skin. This is a very important step that many persons including myself often neglected. Well, that is until I found out the importance of toning the skin. Toning helps to eliminate any remnants of dirt remaining after cleansing and also prepares the skin for any special treatment products that you may be applying.  Additionally the use of toner helps to balance the ph level of the skin.

When selecting a toner, ensure that it does not contain any alcohol as this will cause your face to be dry, making your problems worse.  To use your toner, drop a small amount on a cotton ball and gently apply to your face. Allow the toner to dry on the face.  I personally use a toner that I made myself after a naturalist saw my face. He told me that this will help to clear my face and it indeed it works really well.

Here is where you can apply any special treatment products such as your acne medication.

moisturing cream for good skincare

A moisturizer is essential for the hydrating of the skin. Choose a lightweight moisturizer which is great for oily skin, one that is noncomedogenic. This means that it will not clog the face and cause acne. My favourite moisturizer for the past 3 years hands down is Ponds Clarant B 3 for oily skin. This is very lightweight and helps to reduce the appearance of dark spots on the skin.

Follow up with an SPF in the morning. Persons with dark skin tend to ignore this as they feel that they do not need protection from the skin. However, people with dark skin suffer from the sun damages just like any other persons of different skin colours

Using these steps on a consistent basis has helped me to have a more youthful appearance with healthy glowing skin that is acne free. To the point where I hardly use makeup now and is very confident with the way my skin appears.

I am often complimented on how young I appear to be and trust me that is a boost to my self esteem. If you have oily skin, don’t be afraid of it. Be comforted in the fact that oily skin is one that is less quick to develop wrinkles.
